This page explains where our numbers come from. It will grow as each tool ships; every tool links to its own section here.

Data sources

  • NAVs: AMFI's daily NAV file (all schemes). Full history since 2006 is kept in our own store (a monthly copy of the public historical dataset plus every daily AMFI file since), refreshed nightly.
  • Scheme details: AMFI scheme master (category, ISINs, launch date, minimum amounts), AMFI's TER and fund performance reports (expense ratio, riskometer, AUM) and AMFI scheme details (objective). Exit loads and fund managers come from a commercial data feed where AMFI does not publish them; each value shows its source.
  • Portfolios: the fund houses' own month-end portfolio disclosures (required by SEBI).
  • Benchmarks: the daily NAV of a long-running index fund or ETF that tracks each index (from AMFI's NAV data), used as a stand-in for the index's total return. These are marked "proxy"; they run slightly below the official total return index because of the fund's costs and tracking error.
  • Exchange rates: the FBIL reference rate for the US dollar (Financial Benchmarks India, as published by the RBI) and the European Central Bank's reference rates for other currencies. The UAE dirham, Saudi riyal, Qatari riyal, Omani rial and Bahraini dinar are derived from their official US-dollar pegs. The Kuwaiti dinar is pegged to an undisclosed basket, so it is not converted. Rates are used only to show values in other currencies; fund NAVs and calculator inputs stay in rupees.
  • Inflation: the official Consumer Price Index from MOSPI (National Statistics Office): All India, rural and urban combined, general index, monthly. Annual figures are the average of the twelve monthly year-on-year rates; years before 2013 use the World Bank's annual series. The inflation calculator shows the latest figure and the 10-year average.
  • Interest rates: the RBI policy repo rate and the cut-off yields of the weekly Treasury Bill auctions, from the RBI website. Small-savings rates (PPF, SSY, NSC, SCSS, KVP, POMIS) follow the Ministry of Finance notification for the current quarter; each calculator shows the quarter it uses.

Every figure shows its "as of" date and source. If a source is late, we show the last good data and say so.

Returns

  • Periods of one year or more use CAGR; periods under a year use absolute return.
  • SIP returns use XIRR on the actual cash-flow dates.
  • Funds younger than one year are shown with absolute return only and are left out of rankings.
  • Rankings are factual: the metric and period used to sort are always shown.
  • Regular plans are shown by default, with a Direct toggle and the cost difference.

Calculator conventions

By default "12% a year" means a 12% compound annual growth rate. We convert it to an effective monthly rate, (1 + r)1/12 − 1, and assume each SIP instalment is paid at the start of the month. Some other sites divide the yearly rate by 12 instead; that gives a slightly higher number. Each calculator lets you switch and shows which convention is in use.

₹5,000 a month, 12% a year, 10 years
ConventionValue
r/12, payment at start of month₹11,61,695
r/12, payment at end of month₹11,50,193
Effective monthly rate, payment at start of month (our default)₹11,20,179

Backtests on real NAVs

  • If a transaction date is a holiday, the next available NAV is used.
  • Stamp duty of 0.005% is applied to purchases; units are rounded to 3 decimal places.
  • SIP dates 29–31 are handled explicitly for shorter months; each tool states the rule it uses.
  • No transactions are simulated before a fund's launch date.

Risk measures

Standard deviation, Sharpe and Sortino ratios, beta, alpha, maximum drawdown and up/down capture are computed from daily returns over three years against the scheme's benchmark. The riskometer is the level published by the AMC.

Sharpe, Sortino and alpha compare a fund's return with a reference rate: the cut-off yield of the latest 91-day Treasury Bill auction published by the RBI (shown above). If the RBI figure is unavailable, the last recorded yield is used.

Tax

Post-tax views follow the Income-tax rules for the current tax year (equity STCG 20%, LTCG 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh after 12 months, and slab rate for specified debt funds bought on or after 1 April 2023). They are estimates; please confirm with a tax professional.
